Western Pennsylvania Ski Resorts: 21-22 Lift Rate Roundup

Western Pennsylvania Ski Resorts: 21-22 Lift Rate Roundup

Now that I’ve gotten West Virginia’s Lift Rate Roundup done, it’s due time I give a little love to my home state: Pennsylvania.

You may have heard the news… that the trifecta – Seven Springs, Hidden Valley and Laurel Mountain – just got bought by Vail Resorts and will officially be on the Epic Pass train next year. Don’t worry about that just yet, though! We’re still relishing the sweet old days before the corporate takeover. Enjoy every ounce of this season.

With that, I’ve dug up any deals I could find for this season, such as multi-day pack options for skiers and snowboarders, which are great for those that missed the Spring Season Pass sales earlier in the year (looking into those sales is highly recommended).

Dynamic Pricing

Let’s talk about dynamic pricing for daily lift tickets. There’s no running from it now. You will purchase your lift ticket online and prices will fluctuate from the rack rate based on demand for the day. For example, popular weekends will be priced higher than a “regular” weekend, however, you will also see a price difference in Saturday vs Sunday based on 1.) past demand trends and 2.) how many tickets have already been purchased. Basically, you want to take a look and book early rather than waiting until the last minute to decide your fate (and your ticket price). For the rates listed in my Lift Rate Roundup chart below, if marked dynamic that means I went in today, 12/11 and looked at a holiday rate (NYE/NYD) to get that price.

Check out this screenshot of Snowshoe’s dynamic pricing structure for December. Note the fluctuations during holiday weeks. This pricing is simply subject to change.

Top Resorts to Ski in Western Pennsylvania

If I had to tell you where to ski in Pennsylvania, my top 3 recommendations are:

  1. Seven Springs is where you want to be for the weekend. Great party scene (although covid) and general fun for the 21+ crowd.
  2. If you’re new, Hidden Valley is the place to be. This low-key ski area is very family friendly and great for beginners to learn (I learned here).
  3. Blue Knob is a drive from Pittsburgh but is old-school and worth a visit. Hit this on a midweek pow day and you’ll be smiling ear to ear!

Notable Mention – Snowshoe, WV is worth the drive for the weekend. Book a lodging deal and have fun at one of the biggest resorts around.

Chart Key & Notes

*Every resort will have a Lift, Lesson & Rental (aka Learn-to-Ski/Snowboard) Package for beginners. Please look into this if you are one!

  • Peak Rates = Full price adult full-day lift ticket on a holiday or weekend unless noted. Most resorts have a small discount for non-holidays and it’s much cheaper to go to the mountain mid-week. Usually discounts for children, seniors and military are available.
  • Multi Card = this is any card that allows you to go to the resort on multiple non-consecutive days. Can be either transferrable or non-transferrable to others (this is not a 2 or 3-day lift ticket).

(!) Regional Resort Swap Alert! Wisp Resort Season Pass Holders and Unlimited Pass Holders at Seven Springs, Hidden Valley and Laurel Mountain will each receive one (1) complimentary full-day lift ticket and a 50% discount on regularly priced ski tickets for additional visits to any of the other four participating resorts, excluding Saturdays and holiday / premium periods. Visit their pass pages to learn more.

West Virginia Ski Resorts: 21-22 Lift Rate Roundup

West Virginia Ski Resorts: 21-22 Lift Rate Roundup

Snow dropping in November is my cue that if I haven’t made my annual lift rate roundup, I need to. This year I am outlining ski lift rates by state! I’ve also done some digging to include any late-season deals such as multi-day pack options for skiers and snowboarders, which are great for those that missed the Spring Season Pass sales earlier in the year.

Of course, it’s extremely opportunistic to purchase passes early to get the best rates on skiing and snowboarding this winter. If you haven’t done that, you’re looking at super-high season pass prices and will probably consider lift ticket rates or any package deals instead. This table is for you – I’ve been there many, many times.

Dynamic Pricing

Let’s talk about what most resorts are doing this year: dynamic pricing for daily lift tickets. Basically how this works is you will purchase your lift ticket online and prices will fluctuate from the rack rate based on demand. For the rates listed in my Lift Rate Roundup chart below, if marked dynamic that means I went in today, 11/28 and looked at a holiday rate (NYE/NYD) to get that price.

Top West Virginia Resorts to Ride

If I had to tell you where to ski in West Virginia, my top 3 recommendations are:

  1. Snowshoe is where you want to be for the weekend.
  2. Timberline is old-school cool but all 3 ski areas in Tucker County, WV are IT!
  3. Wisp is most likely the closest mountain to you, and you’ll need to get their Mission: FOUR’DABLE deal!! $239 through Nov 29 (Now Dec 19) ONLY for 4 transferrable tickets ($59.75 ea.)

Notable Mention – Drive to PA! Here are all the lift rates. Seven Springs and Hidden Valley are worth the drive (Springs has a good apres and park scene, Hidden Valley is beginner friendly and family oriented), although Wisp is probably the best for your buck.

It’s 21-22 Spring Season Pass Sale Time!

It’s 21-22 Spring Season Pass Sale Time!

I know it seems impossible to think about, but your best ski deals for the next 2021-2022 season are right NOW! Aggressive? Yes. But find your Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Western New York or Maryland ski season pass deals are all right here and you’ll be happy you did.

My eye is on the Indy Pass (mega pass for single resorts), Timberline ($359!), Wisp (Closest) and Highland Pass (3 resorts and SO MANY perks). Plus, I always regret not getting Wisp’s Mission: Four’dable pack deal… How do I choose?! Someone tell Tucker County to make a Ski the Valley pass and I’ll be DONE!

Christina Skis Mid-Atlantic Mountains

To me, my favorite Mid-Atlantic mountain resorts are in the tri-state area, marked by Snowshoe in the south and Holiday Valley in the north. To get a full range, Whitetail is probably as far as I would drive myself for a day trip, even though I worked at sister resort Liberty Mountain. But with Roundtop, those three are really on the Harrisburg and DC side of PA. Plus, they’re all on the Epic Pass and I’m trying to get you a good deal.

As for the small guys, Tussey, Mystic Mountain and Boyce Park all in Pennsylvania – those are your best mountains to learn on, and I highly recommend them. However, this post is for season passers, the snow people who are already in love and can’t get enough.

Table Key

  • Pass X Payoff = how many times you have to ski or ride at the mountain to pay off your season pass, per weekend rates.
*multi-packs are a good option if you don’t think you’ll go that much.
  • Regular Pass Rates Listed = any day, no blackouts, no discounts. Most mountains offer separate Jr/Sr or Military rates.
  • Buddy Tickets = usually mean 25-50% off lift tickets for a friend or family member, the same day you are there.
  • Swap Tickets = 1 free lift ticket and ticket discounts at… [See Full Details]
    • Resort Swap (7 Springs, Hidden Valley, Laurel Mountain, Wisp & Wintergreen)
    • Mountains of Distinction (Massachusetts: Jiminy Peak, Wachusett, New Hampshire: Cranmore, New York: Bristol Mountain, Holiday Valley, Ski Windham, Vermont: Bromley)
    • 3 days at Cooper Mountain in CO

BONUS CONTENT! THE INDY PASS

#indyrevolution is is in everyone’s mouths right now, and for good reason. The Indy Pass is really good deal for 2 free lift tickets at 63 resorts all over the US, and they keep adding more. If the locations weren’t juuuust far away enough this would have already been in my pocket. Get Wisp on there and it’s mine!

This pass is all about the “core” skier and rider who doesn’t want lift lines and enjoys an authentic mountain vibe. Think hipster, that doesn’t know about White Grass yet. But I hate putting people in boxes. Just get the pass – it doesn’t matter if you’re the goth kid from highschool or Candide Thovex – you’re still going to enjoy it.

Mountains on the pass include Blue Knob (PA), Canaan Valley (WV), Winterplace (WV), Shawnee (PA), Massanutten (VA) and Bryce (VA). But hold up… JAY PEAK?! Come on!

Pass PriceHow it Works
TBD on 21-22, for an idea:

Indy Pass – $259 (with blackouts)
Spring Pass – $149 (March 1)

Boom.

Did I miss one of your faves that you can get to with an easy drive? Do I need to add Ohio to my roundup of states?!?! Let me know in the comments. See you out there! ❄
